How to use Scandinavian decor the right way

Rather than talking about what characterizes the Scandinavian style, I will give you some ideas of how you can take advantage of the concepts behind this increasingly popular style.

Many people feel inspired by the Scandinavian style. When we think about this style, we see simplicity, functionality and coziness. But in fact, the Scandinavian style is much more than white walls, wooden tables, simple lines and a woolen blanket on the sofa. Interior design should above all have the purpose of improving people's daily lives. I would say that it is perfect for those who like cluttered interiors, discreet elegance and little ornamentation.

As a framework, the term “Scandinavian design” originates from a design exhibition that traveled through the USA and Canada with that name between 1954 and 1957. Promoting the “Scandinavian way of life”, he exhibited several works by Nordic designers and established the meaning of the term that continues to this day: a beautiful, simple and minimalist design, inspired by the nature and climate of northern Europe. This style is also characterized by being accessible and available to all, with emphasis on taking advantage of the comfortable environment. The origin of IKEA in this area is now understood.

The region known as Scandinavia is made up of Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Although Finland and Iceland are Nordic countries, geographically they are not part of Scandinavia.

This style that emerged in the 1950s, became popular in the 1990s, remaining to this day... and Scandinavian brands are gaining more and more weight.

On this map are marked the Nordic countries and the Scandinavians

Minimalism is not absence of life

When we talk about Scandinavian design it is inevitable to use the word minimalism.

Pieces of furniture do not pretend to be anything other than what they really are. It is not a question of exaggerating, but of letting the good materials and design speak for themselves.

Try to occupy a wall with a light wooden furniture, with straight lines, with a minimum of ornament. A good solution could also be to decorate a wall with wood. The straight lines and the colors very close to neutral value the simplicity of the space and bring amplitude. We don't need much to be much.

The colored stone is chosen with great care to relate to the wooden materials and enhance the elements of nature. The proximity of the tones is decisive to unify the two materials.

Remember that minimalism does not have to be an absence of life.

Nature for inside the house

The Scandinavian style is known for bringing nature inside the house, through the use of natural materials from the fields and forests that end up giving life to the spaces. To these natural materials such as wood, you can add leather, wool, cotton and linen.

The use of plants are also a big trend and provide a peaceful environment, making us feel closer to nature. Try to take advantage of the textures and colors of different plants.

In this image the more neutral tones of the beeches are in tune with the wood and the element of color is applied through a set of green plants that can be placed in simple glass jars that allow you to visualize the water and the entire plant. Exploring transparency in decorative pieces will help make the space lighter and more careful.

Do not be afraid to “dirty” a clean and minimalist space with poorly treated materials that characterize nature. In the image above, the white of the furniture in contrast to the poorly treated wood of the armchairs make the space more cozy and unexpected.

There are pieces of wooden furniture that can bring some identity to your space. Look for pieces with simple lines and details that do not compromise too much the relationship with the rest of the furniture.

Natural wood and brown leather are a beautiful and timeless combination. The Nordics have long taken advantage of these two materials in furniture.

Although light woods are more characteristic of the Nordic style, the use of woods in darker tones is not out of the question. If you like dark woods and are looking for the calm and balance of the Scandinavian interior, choose to create contrasts with white, gray and beige in walls, pieces of furniture and flooring.

Be functional and use clutter to your advantage

You know the messy disheveled look? One of the most important features of a Scandinavian interior design is to ensure that the space is not confusing, but that it is also not perfect. Therefore, unnecessary clutter must be avoided and storage spaces must be (d) organized intelligently.

Use wall shelves with several tiers to make the space functional, to have storage areas that save space and add visual interest to the space.

A simple piece of furniture, in wood or metal allows a multifunctional storage for books, decorative objects, or small plants that will give a colorful and harmonious touch to the space. Simple structures like this have the great advantage of being able to be applied in various points of your home. On the day when you want to make a small change in the decoration, it will be enough to change the place of the furniture. Keep the dice:P

Small wall shelves help with storage and quick access to objects that we use frequently. Or you can use just to decorate a wall with different pieces of craft that add color, texture and shape to the space.

In the spaces intended for the bedrooms, consider the possibility of applying shelves to store part of your clothes, without the need to acquire large closets.

This does not invalidate the fact that you cannot use disarray to your advantage. To contrast with all the elements that characterize simplicity, do not worry too much about storing and organizing magazines and some objects. If your space is well organized the little that it is uncluttered will give a relaxed touch that is also important.

Shelves may have a more assumed presence on a wall, ending up having an organization and decoration function. If you choose such an option, pay attention to the materials and the design of the shelf itself.

White is not the only option

In relation to the colors used, without a doubt white dominates. The reason is simple, white allows you to make the space as light as possible, even on the grayest and darkest days that are very characteristic in the Nordic countries.

For those who identify with this style, the most common option is to choose to use a reduced amount of colors, with little saturation, in order to create a calm and light color base.

However feel free to choose several shades of the same color and add one or two colors that can occasionally contrast and add some life to the environment. Choose a color that identifies itself, no matter which one, and apply it on a wall, in the selection of paintings that you will place on the walls, in decorative pieces or even on a chair or a small sofa. If you do not apply some touches of color a little more vivid, it will make the space very monotonous.

Do not be afraid to mix light and dark colors to create a good contrast. Interrupt with a strong color to cause extra dynamism.

Materials or shades in gold, silver or copper can bring a little warmth to the cold colors of the Nordic style. Metal lamps, glasses or crucibles can be ways to implement metals in your home.
